About the Breed
This is one of the native North American spitz breeds, developed by a tribe called the Mahlemuts, after which they are named. Alaskan Malamutes are used in sleigh teams, and six harnessed together can cover a distance of 50 miles (80 km) in a day, pulling loads of 700 lb (355 kg) or more. Their rather vulpine appearance belies an affectionate nature. They tend to be a combination of grey or black and white, with distinctive facial patterning forming a mask or cap, or a combination of both.
As may be anticipated from their origins, these are active dogs, not suited to apartment living. At present, the Alaskan Malamute may be less common than other similar breeds such as the Siberian Husky, but it appears to be growing in popularity, especially in the United States and Canada. Coat care presents no particular problems and they are, in addition, very hardy dogs, able to live outdoors in kennels if required, although they do delight in human companionship.
