About the Breed
An old and handsome type of working cattle and sheepdog that
appears to have originated in the border area between Scotland
and England. Their origins may be traced back to the Polish
Lowland Sheepdog, which was said to have been brought to Scotland
as long ago as 1514 by sailors who swapped these dogs for
sheep.
By the 1930s the Bearded Collie had declined dramatically
in numbers, almost to the point of extinction. Mrs. G. O.
Willison was largely responsible for seeking out typical stock
and arousing interest in a breed that has great sagacity and
charm of character. The breed is now well established again
in Great Britain where it has trebled its registrations in
the past six years. It has become a popular breed in the United
States during recent years.
These are lovable, playful dogs, but you must be prepared
to give them adequate exercise, which includes a good daily
run, and spend plenty of time grooming their long and flowing
coats.
Height 21-23 in. (53.5-56 cm)
Weight 66 lb (30 kg)
Colour type/colour The coat is double – the under soft
and close and the outer hard, strong and shaggy with definite’
beard’ on muzzle. Colour slate or reddish-fawn preferred,
but black, all shades of grey, brown and sandy permissible.
With or without white markings.
