About the Breed
Here is the second largest of the Swiss Mountain Dogs or Sennenhunde.
Being long-coated, it is rather like the large Swiss draught
dog, but is smaller is size. The breed is named after the
Canton of Berne, and is by far the most popular of the Swiss
breeds. One cannot help but observe how the St. Bernard is
so very well known, whilst its cousin, the Bernese, which
has been longer in Switzerland, is comparatively a stranger
outside its own country. It is often used as a haulage dog
for the basket weavers of Berne. The Bernese was first imported
through Scotland in 1936; since then, largely through the
pioneering work of Mrs. Egg-Leach, the breed’s ‘Ambassador’,
it was admitted in 1937 to the Stud Book of the American Kennel
Club. The ancestry of this old Swiss breed may date back over
2,000 years to the days of the Roman Empire. Similar dogs
were probably developed in Switzerland to protect supply lines
as the empire expanded. The fortunes of the breed declined
during the latter part of the last century, however, until
a group of breeders sought out the few remaining dogs and
managed to ensure their survival.
Out of the four breeds of Swiss Mountain Dogs, the Bernese
can be easily distinguished by virtue of its long, silky coat,
whereas the coats of the others are short. All are similar
in colouration, being a combination of black with white on
the head, chest and toes, and intervening areas of rich tan
on the legs, chest and cheeks. The coat is easy to keep in
good condition and benefits from daily brushing.
Bernese Mountain Dogs are loyal and alert guard dogs, with
a sound temperament that makes them suitable as family pets.
They are active and need plenty of exercise, otherwise they
can start to put on weight and are liable to become
bored.
Height 25-27½ in. (63.5-70 cm)
Weight 88 lb (40 kg)
Coat type/colour Coat long, soft and silky. Colour jet-black
with russet-brown or tan markings on legs and over eyes. White
chest.
