About the Breed
Originating in the Cheviot Hills that separate
England from Scotland, the Border Terrier is the smallest
of the working terrier breeds. It was first known as the Reedwater
Terrier, a localised name, before being recognised under its
present name in 1880. A tough and hardy breed, the Border
was used originally to drive foxes from their earths. Indeed,
Border Terriers are still kept for working purposes in their
homeland today, although their precise ancestry now appears
unknown.
The Border Terrier might well be the product of the Dandie
Dinmont and the Bedlington, yet it might have been the ancestor
of one of these breeds. It appears that the breed was known
at the end of the seventeenth century as a sporting dog in
Cumberland, Westmorland and Northumberland. Officially recognised
by the English Kennel Club as of breed status in 1920 (the
American Kennel Club followed suit in 1932), it is a game
and sporting dog which is very popular. In spite of their
size, these terriers have the tremendous stamina required
for hunting fin this terrain, accompanying riders on horseback.
For this reason, you should only acquire one of these terriers
if you can give it a long walk on a regular daily basis. Their
short coats are easy to keep in good condition, and a range
of colours, from wheaten to red and both blue and tan and
grizzle and tan are all permissible for show purposes. The
coat does not need stripping to remove dead hair, and possibly
only a brief trim will be required if you wish to show a Border
Terrier. They have probably altered less in appearance down
the years than other terrier breeds, and are particularly
responsive to training.
