About the Breed
This is a large and powerful breed that
was developed by crossing the English Mastiff with the Bulldog.
It was bred specifically to combat poachers on the large estates
in Britain during the early 1800s. Being smaller than the
original Mastiff, yet with the tenacity of the Bulldog, it
was an agile and loyal companion for a solitary gamekeeper
who might encounter a violent group of poachers.
Down the years, the temperament of the Bullmastiff has altered
noticeably and they now prove affectionate family dogs, although
it is essential that these dogs are properly trained to deter
any lingering aggressive tendencies. Bullmastiffs are still
powerful dogs, however, and are not suitable for a child to
exercise. They have been bred in an attractive range of colours,
with a slight white marking on the chest being acceptable,
but not really desirable in a show dog. The mask is frequently
black.
As a breed the Bullmastiff is comparatively new, but it is
true to say that Bulldog-Mastiff crossbred dogs have been
used for a century or so by gamekeepers of large estates.
Since then the breed has become established into a defined
type and has become increasingly popular as a guard and companion
dog. The temperament of the breed combines high spirits, reliability,
activity, endurance and alertness. In 1924, the English Kennel
Club gave it official recognition. Since the American Kennel
Club recognised the Bullmastiff in 1934 the breed has made
good headway in the U.S.A.
