About the Breed
This breed is a re-creation of the type of spaniel that can
be seen in old paintings. Its development came about as a
result of a quest by Roswell Eldridge, and American who offered
large cash prizes at Crufts Dog Show during the 1920s to attract
breeders with this type of dog. The Cavalier can now be distinguished
from the ordinary King Charles Spaniel by the flattened, rather
than domed, appearance of its skull between the eyes, and
its longer, less compact nose. It has developed into a slightly
larger dog.
In 1926 Mr. Roswell Eldridge of New York announced that he
would award £25 in each of two classes at Cruft’s
Show for ‘Blenheim Spaniels of the Old Type as shown
in pictures of Charles II’s time’. In 1926 there
were only two competitors but the interest thus aroused increased
and by 1928 The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club had been
formed. Although much King Charles Spaniel blood was used,
a very different type of toy spaniel soon emerged with a differently
shaped skull and longer muzzle. These ‘Cavaliers’
are now extremely popular since they are active, sporting
and intelligent.

feathering on legs, ears and tail. The skull almost flat between

in. Muzzle tapered to a point.
