About the Breed
A diminutive breed of Mexican origin and developed in the
U.S.A. and now one of the most popular toy breeds in both
America and Great Britain. Chihuahuas are said to descend
from the sacred dogs of the Aztecs. The noble families are
said to have often kept upwards of a thousand dogs each with
its attendant slave.
Recognised by the American Kennel Club in 1904, the original
Chihuahuas were smooth-coated, but through crossing these
with other dog breeds it was possible for breeders in the
United States to produce long-coated forms. Obviously these
dogs require more grooming to keep their coats in top condition.
Chihuahuas are very loyal by nature, and live well in reasonably
confined surroundings, although they do have quite a penetrating
and persistent bark for their size. They are alert, hardy
little dogs and their large upstanding ears add to the impression
of intelligence. They dislike the cold, and are surprisingly
social by nature, so if you find that you have to be out at
times, consider a companion for your dog. This can also help
to overcome the rather finicky eating habits of some Chihuahuas,
as will offering small quantities of food three or four times
during the day.
This is not a breed recommended for children as Chihuahuas
can prove short-tempered and may then snap, while they can
also be fatally injured by a blow on the head. Instead of
having a solid casing to the skull, as is normal, Chihuahuas
generally have an opening here, known as the molera, like
that of a new-born human baby. This never ossifies, leaving
the brain vulnerable as a result.
The smaller the size of the dog the better, providing type
is retained but weight never above 6 lb 9 (2.7 kg) The coat
is of fine, close texture and of any colour. The flat furry
tail is of medium length and carried up or over the back.
Height 6-9 in (15-23 cm)
Weight 2-6 lb (0.9-2.7 kg)
Coat type/colour smooth, long; creamy, bluish
