About the Breed
Although not such a popular variety as the Smooth-haired Dachshund,
the Wire-haired type is probably the best suited for working
purposes. The slight advantage of having a rough and weather-resisting
coat appears to be supported by a remarkable fortitude and
adaptability not so apparent in its fellow varieties, and
for this reason the Wire-haired Dachshund has been used in
wild boar hunting and for beating stag. In 1888 classes were
put on for the variety in Berlin, and they proved so successful
that by 1927 the Wire-haired Dachshund Club was formed to
cater for the Fancy in England. The variety has a slightly
more Terrier-like appearance than its cousins.
Weight 18-28 lb (8.2-12.7 kg)
Colour With the exception of the jaw, eyebrows and ears the
body is covered with an even, short, harsh coat and an undercoat.
All colours permitted. Bearded chin, bushy eyebrows. Smooth
hair on ears.
