About the Breed
One of the less common terrier breeds today, the Dandie Dinmont
Terrier is a very old Border breed. It became famous through
the writings of Sir Walter Scott, being named after a farmer
who featured in his novel Guy Mannering in 1814. It was a
means of arousing public interest in these dogs, since on
of the characters, ‘Dindie Dinmont’, owned a pack
of these sporting terriers. Therefore, it seemed fitting that
these tough, working terriers who had become so popular through
their appearance in a famous novel should take the breed name
of Dandie Dinmont Terriers. The unmistakable appearance of
these terriers results from the top-knot of hair on their
heads, coupled with their relatively long ears. They were
originally used to hunt badgers and otters. Dandie Dinmonts
tend to become devoted to their owners, but are likely to
remain reserved with strangers. Unfortunately, they do have
a stubborn side to their nature, and this can make training
a somewhat more difficult procedure than with other terriers.
The unusual texture of the coat results from a combination
of both hard and soft hairs. Both a brush and a comb are needed
for grooming purposes. The hair must be plucked to prevent
it becoming too long and faded. For show purposes, Dandie
Dinmont Terriers are divided into two groups in terms of colouration.
Those that are termed mustard are of a more yellowish tone,
varying from reddish-brown to pale fawn, whereas peppers can
range from a light shade of silvery-grey through to bluish-black.
Colouration is paler on the underside of the body, and the
hair is usually softer here as well. Although this breed rarely
wins top awards in mixed company, it is an attractive addition
to any show.
Height at the shoulder 8-11 in (20.5-28 cm), and the dog’s
body long, low and muscular.
Weight about 18 lb (8.2 kg)
Coat type/colour The body coat is crisp but the large, domed
head is crowned with soft, silky hair. Body colour may be
‘pepper’ or ‘mustard’
