About the Breed
The Wire-haired variety is the most well known of all the
Terrier family, but it is not quite the general favourite
he used to be. Lively and alert, the Wire makes a good companion
and house dog.
The breed is still at times used for fox bolting, and should
be small enough to enter a fox-earth or drain yet large enough
to run with Hounds. As a recognised breed the Fox Terrier
does not go back so very far, but for several centuries there
have been available many writings of earth dogs and ‘terrars’;
it is to be hoped that the breed will remain game and fearless
even though the majority are now kept as companions or the
exhibition.
Height about 15½ in (39 cm)
Weight 16-18 lb (7.3-8.2 kg)
Coat type/colour Coat dense and wiry; the jaw should be well
whiskered. Colour predominantly white, usually with black
or tan head or body markings; the ‘Hound-marked’
dog is much admired.
