About the Breed
This small unusual working Terrier of Eire is named after
the Glen of Imaal, Co. Wicklow. It is used mostly as a badger-dog,
being exceptionally game and of a handy size for entering
the pipes. For centuries these dogs have been used in the
out-of-the-way dales and glens for fighting purposes, heavy
wages being made on their chances of victory. The sport is
now illegal, but the custom at least ensured a tenacity of
purpose well fitted for the badger drive.
The Glen of Imaal Terrier is a tough and hardy breed, with
a brave nature, it also has a playful side to its character,
and enjoys a good chase after a ball. These terriers are best
kept in fairly rural surroundings, but will adapt to urban
life provided that they can be exercised away from other dogs.
It is officially recognised in Eire and was exhibited for
the first time as a distinct breed at the Irish Kennel Club
Show, Dublin, in March 1934. A Glen of Imaal must possess
the Teastas Misneac (Dead-Game Cert.) before he can become
a full Champion.
Height 14 in (35.5 cm)
Weight 30-35 lb (13.6-15.9 kg)
Coat type/colour Coat fairly harsh but untrimmed. Colour wheaten,
blue or blue-and-tan. Legs short, fore-legs bowed for digging;
tail set high and carried gaily.
