About the Breed
The future of the Irish Wolfhound was in doubt during the
early years of the nineteenth century once the wolves themselves
had been eliminated from Ireland. The breed had been kept
here for as long as 2,000 years, its ancestors being known
to the Romans. The survival of these friendly giants was almost
entirely due to the efforts of one man, a Scot called Captain
George A Graham. Working with the few wolfhounds that were
still alive in the 1860s, and using judicious crossings with
Deerhounds, Graham was able to re-create this ancient breed.
Standing up to 34 in (86 cm) tall, the Irish Wolfhound is
the tallest dog in the world, but, in spite of its size, it
makes a trustworthy companion as well as proving an alert
guard. The breed is only suitable, however, if you have a
large area of land around your home where it can gallop about.
As with other large breeds, long walks are not recommended
for young wolfhounds, but they still need plenty of exercise.
The wiry coat needs relatively little attention, and a wide
range of colours is established, ranging from black through
to fawn, brindle and red to pure white. Puppies have to be
trained from an early age, as, in view of their size, they
can otherwise prove something of a handful in later life.
Height a minimum of 30 in (76cm), bitches 28 in (71 cm)
Weight 85-105 lb (38.6-46.7 kg)
Coat type/colour Coat rough and hard. Colour grey, brindle,
red, black, pure white or fawn. Head long with powerful jaws;
ears small; body racy; tail long.
