About the Breed
Although closely related to the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel,
this particular breed is significantly smaller, and, to avoid
confusion, is better known in the United States as the English
Toy Spaniel. These dogs were apparently great favourites of
King Charles II (1660-85), who used to exercise his pets personally
in St James’s Park in London. Four distinct varieties
are recognised today, on the basis on their colouration, the
traditional form being black and tan. The others are the Prince
Charles, which is tri-coloured, the Ruby, which is chestnut-red,
and the Blenheim, a combination of ruby and white markings,
initially bred by the First Duke of Marlborough and named
after his palace.
The nose of this breed is much shorter than that of the Cavalier,
and the flattened face may make the prominent eyes more prone
to injury as a result. You will need to check the ears regularly
in this breed, as they are both pendulous and heavy. As a
consequence, infections can develop quite easily within the
ear canal, with persistent scratching being an early sign
of irritation. Seek veterinary assistance without delay, as
some infections of this type can be difficult to cure successfully,
especially if treatment is delayed.
These spaniels, which vary considerable in size, are usually
friendly dogs and should settle well in the company of other
pets, notably cats, without problems. You must be prepared
to groom the coat each day, and the eyes may also benefit
from being wiped over at the corners with moist cotton wool,
to remove any build-up of dirt.
Height 10 in (25 cm)
Weight 8-14 lb (3.6-6.4 kg)
Coat type/colour Smooth, long coated. Colour (King Charles)
rich glossy black with bright mahogany tan markings; (Tricolour)
white with black patches and tan markings, with white blaze;
(Ruby) rich chestnut red; (Blenheim) white with chestnut red
patches and wide white blaze, and the famous red spot on the
forehead.
