About the Breed
Without doubt the Maltese is the oldest of the European Toy
breeds, references having been made to this race by Aristotle
and Strabo as coming from the island of Melita or Malta; later
John Caius (1510-73) called the breed Melite. As far back
as 1763, when Sir Joshua Reynolds painted the then leading
beauty, Nellie O’Brien, he showed her with a typical
Maltese resting on her lap. It came to England about the time
of Henry VIII, but was most popular in the 1880s. During recent
years this breed’s charming appearance and endearing
characteristics have done much to increase its popularity.
Height not over 10 in (25 cm)
Coat type/colour Coat long and silky, quite straight and without
any trace of woolliness. Colour white desirable but any self
colour permitted. Head rather Terrier-like; ears dropped,
well-feathered; eyes dark with black rims; body short and
cobby tail curled over the back.
