About the Breed
Purely British in its origin, and probably descended from
the old broken-haired Black-and-Tan Terrier, the modern Manchester
Terrier is best known in the North of England, and in Lancashire
in particular. It had its heyday in the last half of the last
century, when it was quite fashionable. With the ban on ear
cropping becoming effective, the quality and popularity of
the Manchester deteriorated, its specialist Club became defunct,
and eventually the breed neared distinction. Recently, breeders
have been able to repair the damage and there are a number
of good dogs to be seen at the shows.
Height about 16 in (40.5 cm), bitches about 15 in (38 cm).
Ears small and V-shaped, hanging close to the head.
Coat type/colour Coat close, smooth, short and glossy and
of firm texture. Colour jet black with rich mahogany tan markings.
