About the Breed
This breed, the more popular of the Italian shepherd dogs,
is common in Central Italy from Tuscany to the Abruzzes, being
used for herding and guard work. The Maremma leads a hard
life, though often fed only on curds and whey. It is recognised
by both the Italian and English Kennel Clubs as a pure breed,
and was imported into Britain first by Mrs. Home-Robertson
in 1931, and now has several devotees and a specialist Club.
However, it has not gained the popularity it deserves.

Coat type/colour Coat medium in length, soft, lustrous and
tight-fitting. Colour white, though sometimes lemon, biscuit
or fawn. Head and body like the Kuuvasz but more refined;
nose black; eyes opaque; loins slightly arched; tail carried
low.
