About the Breed
A wealth of history stands behind the Mastiff breed, dating
back to centuries BC. As a fighting dog it was used in most
wars of Asia and Europe, by the Romans (who even had an officer
titled the Procurator of Dogs stationed in Britain to send
Mastiffs to the Roman Amphitheatres), and in the Middle Ages,
in Britain, as a bear-baiting dog. It is certainly of Asiatic
origin, coming to Britain through Epirus and the Phoenicians
before the time of the Roman conquest. With the extinction
of bear-baiting, the race went out of vogue, but recovered
again. After the Second World War there was a risk of the
breed becoming extinct in this country but the danger has
been overcome.
Size, the larger the better, providing the dog is massive,
powerful, symmetrical and sound.
Coat type/colour Coat short, smooth and close-lying. Colour
apricot or silver fawn, dark fawn-brindle, always with a black
muzzle and nose.
