About the Breed
Another of the ancient Oriental breeds, whose ancestry can
be traced back to the Tang dynasty, about 1,200 years ago,
the Pekingese was finally brought to Europe for the first
time in 1860, following the seizure of Peking by British troops.
One of these, ‘Looty’, was presented to Queen
Victoria. After the death of the Empress Tzu Hsi, in 1911,
the fine Palace specimens became rare, and the breed has generally
fallen into neglect in China. Most of the good Pekingese in
Britain and America are descendants of stock smuggled out
of China at the end of the last century.
Prior to this, these dogs had been closely associated with
the Chinese imperial court, and could only be kept by the
nobility. They were known as sleeve dogs, because their small
size enabled them to be carried within the flowing robes or
the emperor.
Without doubt the Pekingese is the most favoured of Toy breeds
in Britain. One on the first Pekingese obtained from China
was presented to Queen Victoria in England, and this helped
to gain the breed immediate popularity. These small dogs are
available in a wide range of colours and colour combinations,
all of which are acceptable for show purposes except for liver
and lbino. They enjoy being lavished with affection, as befits
their royal ancestry, but they are quite hardy little dogs
as well.
Take care when exercising them during periods of hot weather,
as Pekingese can suffer from heat stroke. Their prominent
eyes are also vulnerable to injury, and they should certainly
be discouraged from running through undergrowth once off the
leash. You must be prepared to groom the flowing coat every
day in order to prevent it from becoming tangled. The Pekingese
is an ideal breed for people who are at home on their own
throughout the day, as it will from a strong bond with its
owner. Left alone to their own devices for long, however,
the intelligent and mischievous side to their nature will
soon become apparent, and they are likely to prove destructive.
Height 6-9 in (15-23 cm)
Weight 11 lb (5 kg)
Coat type/colour Coat long, straight and flat, with profuse
feathering on thighs, legs, toes and tail. With the exception
of liver all colours, including white, are permissible. Parti-colours
should be evenly broken. Head wide and flat between the ears,
with short wrinkled muzzle; body leonine; tail curled and
plumed.
