About the Breed
Being a miniature Spitz, the Pomeranian has a close affinity
with the Arctic breeds, such as the Samoyed, Elkhound and
Finnish Spitz, the Central European Keeshond and the Italian
Volpino. When first introduced into Britain, it was almost
like the German Wolfspitz of today, but gradually became smaller,
until the old 20-30 lb (9.1-13.6 kg) dog disappeared and the
modern Toy took its place. In the early days the breed did
not attract much attention, but with Queen Victoria patronising
the Fancy in 1888 and the formation of the first breed Club
in 1891, the Pomeranian became popular. This is the smallest
member of the group of spitz dogs, distinguished by their
curly tails and upright ears. It appears to have been developed
in the German province of Pomerania, and attracted the attention
of Queen Victoria. She exhibited the breed at the Crufts Show
of 1891, and this immediately led to an upsurge of interest
in these dogs. Originally, Pomeranians were much larger than
they are today, weighing as much as 30 lb (13.6 kg), but now
members of this breed are lighter than 8 lb (3.6 kg). Nevertheless,
they have retained the typical temperament of a spitz dog,
being lively and loyal, and generally prove easy to train.
Pomeranians are available in a wide range of colours, and
will live quite contentedly in a home where there is a small
garden, with a park in the neighbourhood for more prolonged
periods of exercise.
Grooming is more time consuming than with some breeds, as
the Pomeranian has a dense undercoat and a long, straight
outer coat. Trimming will also be necessary on occasion, to
ensure that the coat remains immaculate. They are very alert
dogs and will indicate the presence of strangers by yapping
loudly. Although this can be advantageous under certain circumstances,
you may need to dissuade a Pomeranian from barking unnecessarily
at the slightest sound. Nevertheless, as small guard dogs
they can give great reassurance, especially to elderly owners
who are living on their own.
