About the Breed
Now confined to the southern shores of the Algarve region
of Portugal, the Portuguese Water Dog was once common to the
entire coast. There known as the Cão d’Água;
this breed is extremely old and is highly valued by the fishing
populace, who use it for many purposes, notably to retrieve
lost tackle, broken nets, etc., that may have been lost overboard,
or sometimes a s courier between the fleet and the shore.
A few years ago two or three specimens appeared at English
shows and attracted a good deal of attention but do not seem
to have made any permanent impact.

Coat type/colour Coat long and free, often clipped Poodle-fashion,
with a top-knot and also a lion-tuft on the tail-tip. Colour
black, black-and-white, chocolate, chocolate-and-white, and
pearl-grey.
