About the Breed
Unfortunately, the curly-coated variety of the Retriever is
somewhat uncommon at the present time – although numbers
are increasing once more. The late Brig. General Lance did
much to ensure the breed’s survival. As a sporting dog,
it is of immense value, being well disciplined and keen; the
tightly curled coat which so often gathered burrs during the
day’s work was possibly one drawback which caused the
Curly to go out of favour. His exact origin is not known,
but amongst his ancestors were probably the now extinct Water
Dog and, possibly the Irish Water Spaniel. Like the black
Labrador, the Curly has always been a worker rather than a
companion dog.

Weight about 70-80 lb (31.8-36.3 kg)
Coat type/colour Coat tight crisp curls from the peak of the
head to the set-on of tail; coat is of paramount import to
this breed. Colour jet black or liver.
