About the Breed
These attractive dogs were another of the sporting Breeds developed in the second half of the nineteenth century. They were bred on the Guisachan Estate in Scotland, which was owned by Lord Tweedmouth. Here the Golden Retriever initially evolved from crossing a yellow retriever of Flat-coat ancestry with a local and now extinct breed known as the Tweed Water Spaniel, itself a retriever with a tightly-curled coat. Detailed contemporary records show how the Golden Retriever came into existence over the course of the next two decades. There was introduction of new blood from further Labradors and Wavy-coated Retrievers as well as an Irish Setter. The Yellow or Golden Retriever, as the breed became known, rapidly gained in popularity in late-Victorian England.
At the turn of the century, the emergent breed was known as the Golden Flat-coated Retriever, and only achieved separate status in 1913. These dogs were already known in the United States by this stage, having been introduced there during the 1890s. There is still variation in the depth of colouration of the Golden Retriever. It can vary from cream to gold, but must not border on red or mahogany. The Golden Retriever Club was founded in 1911 and the breed rapidly gained popularity after 1918 when its charming character and working ability became appreciated.
Golden Retrievers are delightful dogs with an excellent temperament both as a gundog or family per. Their natural retrieving instincts mean that they should be given a ball or flying disc to chase when they are being exercised. A good daily run is essential, and they will benefit from being kept in an environment with a large garden.
