About the Breed
During recent years, the popularity of the Rottweiler has
grown at a tremendous rate. Unfortunately, a number of people
have been attracted to this dog because of its macho image
and, sadly, serious and sometimes fatal injuries have been
caused by Rottweilers going beserk, frequently because of
poor training. This is actually an intelligent and responsive
breed, which has been used for a wide variety of purposes,
ranging from police dogs to mountain rescue guide. It is also
a prominent contender in many obedience competitions, and
a popular entrant in the show ring.
Rottweilers were unknown in Britain until 1936, having been
recognised only the previous year by the American Kennel Club.
The breed’s origins can be traced back to the town of
Rottweil in Württemburg, Germany. Their ancestors were
used to drive cattle to market and to guard them. In addition,
they were trained to pull carts and defend their owners from
attacks by highwaymen.
The Rottweiler is not a breed that can be recommended for
a home where there are young children. Firm training is also
essential, and you must spend sufficient time with these dots
to ensure that they do not become bored, as this can be a
recipe for disaster. Exercise is also essential, and it may
be worth fitting a muzzle to your pet when it is off the leash,
especially in the company of other dogs. Even fellow dog-owners
may be nervous about Rottweilers, following the unwelcome
publicity that the breed has generated.
Named after the town of Rottweil, the Rottweiler is a well-known
cattle dog on the Continent. Centuries ago it was used by
the Swabian knights in the chase of the wild boar with some
similar breeds which are now extinct. As a drovers’
dog, the Rottweiler excels, and recently it has been developed
and trained as guide-dog, police tracker and army dog. The
breed is established in the U.S.A. and there is an increasing
amount of interest in this country.
