About the Breed
The largest of the English sporting Spaniels, and named after
Clumber Park, where it was developed about 1770. Of French
origin the breed’s antecedents are mysterious; the ‘Alpine
spaniel’ has been a suggested relation but little is
known of these dogs. Although not the least popular of the
Spaniel family, the Clumber spaniel is by no means well known,
despite the great efforts of King George V to resuscitate
the breed. Many of the best dogs were produced in the Sandringham
kennels. The stocky Clumber is the heaviest of all the spaniels,
with dogs of this breed weighing up to 70 lb (32 kg).
Although not ranking as one of the most common spaniels, the
Clumber is still highly valued as a sporting companion. It
was developed for its scenting skills, but also probes versatile
enough to make a good retriever as well. Clumber Spaniels
may not be as agile as some breeds, but there is no doubting
their stamina. This is not a suitable companion in an urban
environment, however, preferring more spacious surroundings
where it can have plenty of exercise.
The coat of this breed is somewhat less profuse than in other
spaniels and mud will brush out easily once it has dried.
In terms of colouration, Clumber Spaniels are invariably lemon
and white or orange and white, with paler markings generally
being preferred. Their feet are covered with dense hair, and,
especially after exercise in the summer months, you must check
for grass seeds that may have become tangled up here. These
could otherwise penetrate into the feet and track up the leg,
causing a painful injury.

Weight 55-70 lb (25-31.8 kg)
