About the Breed
This English gundog is named after the county of Sussex, where,
at the end of the 18th century, it was first bred. The pioneer
of the breed was Mr. Fuller of Rosehill Park, near Hastings,
who, by the time of his death in 1847, had bred Sussex Spaniels
for half a century. His dogs were the ancestors of most of
the present-day specimens. The Sussex is a slow worker but
intensely conscientious, its placid and hard-working nature
making them highly valued both as gundogs and companions.
It is a low-to-ground dog purposely bred so in order to push
through and under brambles and thickets rather than clamber
over them like a Springer.
The Sussex Spaniel is a distinctive shade of golden-lever,
with this colouration being broken only by a white chest spot
in some individuals. This is considered a show fault, in contrast
to the situation in a number of other breeds of spaniel. It
has never established a following as a pet dog, as it strongly
retains its tough working instincts. For this reason, the
Sussex Spaniel is most suited to a rural environment and requires
considerable exercise by way of daily walks.

Weight about 45 lb (20.4 kg)
Coat type/colour Coat short, abundant, flat, with moderate
