About the Breed
The precise origins of this breed, which resembles the Britany,
are unclear. It may have resulted form the combination of
English Springers and Clumber Spaniels, but the only accepted
colour combination is rich red and white. Welsh Springers
were recognised officially by the Kennel Club in 1902, but
are not a very common breed, although they are widely known
and are accepted by the American Kennel Club. Welsh Springers
are quite easy to prepare for showing. Their coats are relatively
soft and any sign of curling is considered a distinct fault.
The Springer Spaniel of Wales is slightly smaller than its
English Cousin and is easily recognised by its red-and-white
colouring. In Wales it is often called the Tarfgi or ‘dispersing-dog’,
being very popular there, where it is used for water work
as well as on land. It is probably directly descended from
the Spaniels referred to in the Ancient Laws of Wales, codified
in the 10th century. An active and high-spirited dog, the
Welsh Springer Spaniel was officially recognised in 1902.
After the last war it became extremely rare but has now gained
ground and is often seen at shows and as a companion. It should
be given more opportunity to work.
These spaniels have great stamina and probe diligent workers,
not afraid of entering water. As a result, they are not well
suited to a purely domestic existence, but will thrive here
if they are also kept active. They prove loyal and trustworthy
dogs, with a keen scenting ability, like their English counterparts.
