About the Breed
Crossings of terriers with Bulldogs during the early years
of the nineteenth century gave rise to the origins of this
breed. It was developed for dog-fighting purposes in England,
but when this activity was made illegal, breeders sought to
remove aggressive traits from its nature, recognition was
slow in coming, however, the Kennel Club of Great Britain
only acknowledging the Staffordshire Bull Terrier in 1935.
These are relatively stubborn dogs by nature, and still retain
a tendency to scrap with other dogs that cross their path.
Firm training is therefore essential from the outset, especially
if you keep one of these terriers in an urban area, where
it is more likely to come into contact with other dogs. they
tend to make loyal house pets, however, and probe determined
guards of property.
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier was recognised by the American
Kennel Club in 1974. A slightly different form is also popular
here, classified separately as the American Staffordshire
Terrier, often abbreviated to AmStaffs. These are not the
same as the fearsome American Pit Bull Terrier, but resemble
their English ancestor in temperament. A good choice of colour
is available in the case of both Staffordshire breeds.
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier was seldom seen in the south
of England until the early 1920s and it was not until the
1930s that the breed was officially recognised by the English
Kennel Club. In the U.S.A. the breed has been known since
about 1870 and American dogs are somewhat heavier than those
favoured in England. The Staffordshire of both countries is
strong, brave and intelligent.
