About the Breed
The Terrier of Tibet is better known than the national Spaniel,
although in Britain it has not become popular yet. The breed
is well known in India, but is now attracting more notice
in England, where it appears at most of the major shows. In
spite of its name, this breed is not derived from terrier
stock, but was originally bred in Tibet as a herding dog.
There was some confusion among the various Tibetan breeds
when they first became more widely known in the West during
the early years of the present century, but the Tibetan Terrier
was subsequently acknowledged by the Kennel Club in Great
Britain during 1937. In the United States, it was only recognised
for showing purposes as recently as 1973.
Aside from their herding activities, these shaggy dogs were
highly valued as companions in their homeland, and the reasons
for this are not hard to recognise today. They are happy,
friendly dogs with a tolerant disposition towards children.
Their coat, which is now more profuse than in the past, creating
a very elegant appearance, will need daily brushing to prevent
it from becoming tangled.
These terriers can be bred in a wide range of colours, with
only liver or chocolate being frowned upon in show circles.
While in its early days the Tibetan Terrier was shown in a
tousled state, many hours of preparatory work are now essential
when benching these dogs. As a breed they are alert, intelligent
and sporting.
