About the American Quarter Breed
.An interesting example of breeding for a
particular purpose is the American Quarter Horse. It began in
Virginia in very early days, where, owing to the lack of cleared
sites for racecourses, the first horse-racing in America was
carried on along short improvised tracks called “race
paths”, which were in fact cut out of the virgin wilderness.
These tracks were usually about a quarter of a mile long, and
so the horse that was bred to race on these tracks was called
the “Quarter Horse.”
For this type of racing a very quick starter and fast sprinter
was required, and in due course a specific type was produced,
originally from a cross of thoroughbred stallions and native
mares. These latter were no doubt mostly of Spanish origin from
stock brought in from Florida through the Carolinas, but some
were of Thoroughbred blood.
From a genealogical point of view the Quarter horse breed starts
from an English Thoroughbred, “Janus,” which flourished
in Virginia and North Carolina between 1756 and 1780. His distance
in England was actually four miles, but curiously enough his
progeny in America were generally noted for their speed over
short distances, and had few equals in quarter racing. “Janus”
stood 14.2 hands and his outstanding physical characteristic
was his heavy and powerful hindquarters, with great, prominent
muscles. The breed that he propagated still exists and is officially
known as the American Quarter Horse.
The special points of these horses are closeness to the ground,
tremendous power, heavy frames extremely well muscled up, especially
in the hindquarters, loin and back. The withers, it should be
noted, are low. The height of stallions is usually about 15
hands, and weight nearly 1,200lb. They have great speed from
200 yards to a quarter of a mile, which is their limit. They
are much favoured by cattle men for the work of rounding up
cattle, as their fast starting and sprinting enable them to
head any beast quickly, and are combined with nimbleness and
weight and strength, giving them power to hold a heavy steer
when it is roped. In addition, they possess a calmness of temperament
that is not affected by sudden starts and changes of speed,
and they have the ability to do well on any kind of food.
