About the Anglo-Arab Breed
.As the title implies, this is a composite
breed, but it is so well established and so universally recognised
that it is entitled to a place among the world’s breeds
of horses. It may be said too, that it has an especial claim
to this, because it is composed of the two purest breeds, the
Arab and the Thoroughbred, and possesses no alien blood.
The authority in England controlling the breed is the Arab Horse
Society, which keeps a Stud Book or Register for the purpose,
the conditions of entry being that the Anglo-Arab in question
must be:
1. The produce only of Arab horses which are entered either
in the Arab Horse Stud Book or the General Stud Book (Arabian
Section), and of horses entered in the General Stud Book other
than the Arabian Section of the same.
2. Horses directly descended from ancestors that are eligible
for entry under the conditions set out above.
3. Anglo-Arabs bred in foreign countries and entered in the
recognised stud books of those countries may also be accepted
for registration, if approved by the Council of the Arab Horse
Society.
The more usual breeding is by the Arab
horse on the Thoroughbred mare, and whether this or the reverse
breeding be the case, it can well be understood that the result
is a horse of outstanding quality, always supposing that the
sire and dam are typical specimens of their respective breeds.
It is noticeable, however, that whereas one specimen will
be strongly Arab, the other may be markedly Thoroughbred.
In the same was as with all breeding, no certainty of height
can be looked for, except that the resulting animal will probably
be somewhere in height between its sire and dam.
In numberless breed and saddle classes Anglo-Arabs have figured
with success in competition with most other breeds of light
horses. Because of the added stamina and intelligence, derived
through the Arab, the Anglo-Arab had proved itself to be a
good hunter and a very beautiful hack, having all the necessary
gaiety and airiness of movement and the great refinement necessary
for this class of animal. It has made its mark in horse trials,
flat races, steeplechases, point-to-point races, and in the
show ring, and it is naturally an excellent medium as a dressage
horse.
