About the Appaloosa Breed
.The spotted horse, beloved of the circus
and used frequently where a striking appearance together with
a docile temperament is required, is to be found in many different
parts of the world. Of recent years commendable efforts have
been made in the USA to establish and standardise the breed
and the Appaloosa Horse Club has been formed there.
The name is derived, it seems, from a breed, which was developed
by the Nez Percé Indians in the Palouse country of central
Idaho and Eastern Washington, and was produced primarily for
war uses. Something akin to these horses has been found in ancient
Chinese paintings dating back over 3,000 years. A similar type
of horse is also known as the Colorado Ranger, for which an
authority claims that they are American-bred Moroccan Barbs
derived from stock imported from Spanish Andalusia.
The body is pink-skinned and covered by a silky white coat with
a large number of black spots superimposed. The spots are of
varying sizes, and it is a curious fact that they can be felt
by a touch of the finger. They are found on all parts of the
body and legs, and are in more profusion on the quarters. The
effect is very striking, and makes them in great demand for
circus work. The colouring on many occasions varies both as
to the skin and the spots, chocolate often being the colour
of the latter.
An infusion of Arab blood has given the horse a touch of quality,
and this is particularly noticeable in the refinement of head
and gaiety of carriage, making it an animal of considerable
attraction not only in appearance but as a riding horse.
In height the Appaloosa may be said to be from 14.2 to 15.2
hands, thus being a handy size for riding, and weighs perhaps
800 to 1,000 lb. Of good shoulder and body, with strong legs
having plenty of bone and a well-defined wither, a good specimen
conforms to the standard required for riding, and it should
be noted that some horses exceed the height given.
It is obviously incorrect to describe all spotted horses as
Appaloosas, since this peculiarly marked animal has been known
for centuries in various parts of the world. It id for this
reason that the British sponsors of the breed describe them
as Spotted Horses.
