About the Ardennes Breed
.Ardennes may be considered either as a French
or Belgian breed, as the mountains from which he originally
came belong according to their exact location to either country.
The Ardennes is a very hardy horse, the most resistant of all
to unfavourable conditions of climate and feeding. The breed
is very old, and in the last three centuries submitted to many
changes, such as increase in size and weight by crossing with
Brabancons, which was done at the expense of other qualities
of the breed, such as power of endurance, vigour and a very
good action.
During the 17th century the Ardennes was used as a cavalry horse
by Marshal Turenne, and being a good stayer, very hardy, docile,
but with a lively temperament, was much appreciated. During
Napoleon’s campaign against Russia in 1812 Ardennes distinguished
themselves, enduring all hardships much better than other breeds;
so did they during the First World War, but then served more
as artillery wheelers, as by this time their type was already
changed again. Today there exists in the mountains a small Ardennes
from 14.2 to 15.1 hands, which is nearest to the old original
type, while others are of heavy draught type. The horse is very
popular not only in France and Belgium but also in other countries,
particularly in Sweden.
Now that the transport in towns and work on farms has become
so greatly mechanised, the future of this famous Ardennes breed
must, with that of so many others, be largely problematical.
But where a working horse of low draught and great hardiness
is required, combined with a good free moving gait, the breeding
of the Ardennes will continue. No longer, of course, will this
horse be required in any quantity for army purposes and it is
likely that to a large extent it will be found only in its own
country.
