About the Austrian Breed
.In Austro-Hungary before the war, besides
indigenous and a large number of half-bred horses used for both
saddle and harness, there were Austrian breeds such as the Lipizzaner,
Kladruber and Pinzgauer. The Kladruber horse takes its name
from a place in Bohemia where it was bred at the Imperial Stud.
They are derived from Spanish horses imported to Austria and
Bohemia from Spain and Italy, and from which they inherited
most of their typical characteristics, such as conformation,
high action, roman noses and long, heavy-crested arched necks.
The selection went in the direction of increasing considerably
their size (they stand 17 to 18 hands) and producing either
black or white animals. With their high action in teams of six
or eight of one colour they made the most imposing Imperial
carriage horses, and were used only on very big occasions. Their
practical value was never taken into much account.
The Pinzgauer, usually roan in colour, is a very powerful heavy
draught horse, standing 15 to 16 hands and having clean, strong
legs. It is said to trace its origin to the Friesian horses
and was bred first in the Pinzgau district of Styria. Later
on its breeding was extended to Upper Austria and its export
organised. The Pinzgauer is a typical heavy draught horse of
good shape, having an exceptionally good body and satisfactory
shoulder for the work required of it. Short on the leg, it is
admirably suited for slow, heavy, direct traction, and as the
Percheron is to France, so is the Pinzgauer to Austria. Its
future, as with that of other horses required for work distinct
from pleasure, must be problematical. Being of the Percheron
and Suffolk type, with its “clean” or “hairless”
fetlocks and lower limbs, the breed may be counted upon to enjoy
some of the virtues of these two, but if anything it lacks the
lightness of movement which is always claimed for the Suffolk.
As with all breeds of heavy or cold-blooded horses, what these
typical Austrian horses lack in activity and intelligence they
gain in tractability and docility. Having regard to their great
strength – and this again applies to all heavy breeds
– those who handle them can only be thankful for this
placid temperament.
