About the Boulonnais Breed
.The early history of the Boulonnais (French)
breed is of a horse which was bred in that region during the
Crusades and was much improved by Arab and Barb stallions brought
from the Middle East by the French Crusaders. In the course
of ages this breed submitted to certain changes and at one time,
before railways were popularised, the Boulonnais existed in
the form of a very strong horse with good action and stamina.
This enabled it to be used in coaches for fast transport, such
as bringing fresh oysters from the seacoast to Paris.
The type enjoyed great fame and was exported to other countries
where a strong, fast-moving carriage horse, having endurance,
was needed. Some of them were exported before the First World
War to Poland, and they appeared to be very useful when crossed
with local stock, probably thanks to the link of Arab blood,
which at one time was introduced into both breeds.
Today the Boulonnais is a very heavy draught horse, standing
16 to 17 hands, quick-growing, with great bone and muscles,
and may be used for farm work when it is 18 months old. At 4-5
years old, being horses of enormous weight and power, they are
usually employed in industry in big cities. The Boulonnais are
much better movers than would be supposed. They are black, bay,
red roan, blue roan and dappled grey. Once a type of “postier”
and later an agricultural horse, the Boulonnais today, through
selection and very strong feeding, is a heavy-draught horse
and is bred in two types: the Abbeville type, which is of medium
size, and a large, very heavy Dunkirk type. Although their name
derives from Boulogne, they are bred also in Picardy, Artois,
Haute Normandy and in parts of Flanders, where a strong, massive
horse is needed for very heavy work.
Among connoisseurs of heavy-draught breeds the opinion prevails
that a dash of Boulonnais blood in “cold-blood”
breeds plays the same role as that of the English Thoroughbred
in the breeding of saddle horses.
In the Boulonnais France has, with the Dutch Draught, the strongest
and most impressive draught horse in Europe. It resembles the
Percheron, not only in type but also largely in colour. The
infusion of Arab blood in years gone by is still noticeable
in many specimens of the breed, which for the same reason is
claimed to possess a certain elegance in spite of its massive
appearance.
