About the Camargue Breed
.The grey-white horses or the Camargue inhabit
the remote swampland of the Rhone delta in South-eastern France.
Shaggy and wild in appearance, their origin has never been definitely
established. Unlike some authorities, Professor E. Bourdelle,
the French expert on equine history, believes these ponies are
not linked directly with the primitive Solutré horse,
but are only its first cousins, and suggests that the Camargue
breed descends from the quaternary horse. The basis of his argument
is the fact that the Camarguais is one of the few breeds in
the world to have six and sometimes even seven lumbar vertebrae
– other horses normally have five. The true Camarguais
has a wide chest, large barrel, strong quarters and short sturdy
legs, and a large, somewhat ugly head with straight or concave
profile, the eyes being placed slightly more to the side of
the head than in other breeds. Standing only a bare 15 hands,
but weighing about 800lb, the Camarguais possesses the measurements
of a horse with much greater weight.
Camargue horses breed in free-ranging herds on poor reedy pasture,
mostly salty marshland. The uneven sparse terrain, particularly
bleak in winter and searingly dry and hot in summer, together
with the semi-wild life with almost complete lack of man’s
care, has produced a tough, sure-footed breed with an instinct
for survival. Difficult initially to catch and break in, the
horses become good agile mounts, able to jump and swim. The
Gardiens, the cowboys of the Camargue, use the horses for herding
the local bulls bred for the native non-lethal Course Libre.
