About the Falabella Breed .This breed of miniature horse has been developed
during the last 150 years in the Argentine by the Falabella
family on the Recreo de Roca Ranch, outside Buenos Aires. Their
height does not exceed 30 inches at maturity, so they can claim
to be the world’s smallest horse. The Shetland pony was
the basis of the breed, which was developed downwards by in-breeding
and crossing with the smallest possible animals. Unfortunately
no records have been kept. The breed appears to be stabilised
at the present size, and they are much in demand in North America
as pets and for use in harness. All colours are found, but Appaloosa
marked ones are being specially bred.
