About the Flemish Breed
.Another breed of Belgian horse is the Flemish,
which is said to be closely related to the Friesian. Leyden
says: ‘In spite of his (the Flemish) fame from mediaeval
times, he is fighting a battle against extinction.’ Great
Britain used to import a great number of Flemish horses from
the time of Richard Lionheart. Document prove that at least
100 stallions, including many Brabants were imported into the
country, so that many of our heavy horse breeds carry a considerable
amount of Flemish and Brabant lines.
Belgium has always had a preference for heavy horses, and from
the 11th century until the 16th century, Flanders and Brabant
were the centres for the studs of the Great Horse. Dutch, Holstein
and Danish horses were introduced into the studs in the 17th
and 18th centuries, and in the second half of the 19th century
a great demand for heavy horses had to be met.
It is estimated that 90 percent of Belgium’s horses are
of the cold-blood type. The oldest ‘bloodline’ is
‘Orange I’ (1863-1885), whose descendants are ‘Jupiter’
and ‘Brilliant’, and especially ‘Albion d’Hor’
whose blood is found in almost every pedigree of these heavy
horses. Only ten to twelve mares are accepted for each stallion.
Horses are exhibited annually at the Brussels show.
