About the French Thoroughbred Breed
.Though Frenchmen had been importing English
Thoroughbreds since the late seventeen-hundreds, only with the
organisation of races under the Restoration was the breed made
official, and in 1833 Lord Seymour presided over a meeting with
a view to the establishment of the French Book. Races, however,
were restricted to horses bred and raised in France, until in
1863 the Grand Prix de Paris, an international race, was founded
on the initiative of the Duc de Morny. Since then French breeders
have emphasised staying power in their selection of breeding
stock, a policy that has made French racehorses among the best
in the world. ‘Monarque’ was the first truly great
Thoroughbred and he became the founder of one of the most successful
French bloodlines. However, despite a few French victories in
England, it was not until 1865, when ‘Gladiateur’
won the British Triple Crown, that French Thoroughbreds gained
any substantial reputation outside France.
As in most other countries 70 to 90 percent of the leading racehorses
in France descend from ‘Eclipse’ (the direct descendant
of the Godolphin Arabian), while the Matchem line is in an even
more precarious situation than it is in England. The most influential
sires were the grey ‘Le Sancy’, ‘Dollar’,
‘St. Simon’, ‘Galopin’, and eventually
‘Brantome.’
M. Marcel Boussac was primarily responsible for the miraculous
revival of French Thoroughbred racing after the Second World
War. At his Fresnay-le-Buffard Stud, ‘Tourbillon,’
by ‘Ksar’, and ‘Pharis’, by ‘Charos’,
have produced a spectacular number of leading racehorses. Baron
Guy de Rothschild at Méautry, Mme Volterra, Jean Stern,
Francois Dupré and Prince Aly Khan all did their share
to carry the French Thoroughbred to its present enviable position
in the world of the racehorse. Thoroughbred breeding has been
concentrated in Normandy and the Paris region; the south and
south-west of France have also seen a certain growth. The results
obtained there, despite soil conditions and the generally poorer
quality of the brood mares, give reason to think that the sunnier
climate of the south may be beneficial.
While thoroughbreds are being bred in France almost exclusively
for racing, there is a great deal of cross-breeding being carried
on. Brood mares of various local breeds throughout France are
being crossed with Thoroughbreds in an effort to generally upgrade
them, because the Thoroughbred invariably produces the stimulus
necessary, more particularly for all forms of competition. Since
the Thoroughbred as a breed is by now standard throughout the
world, a description of the Thoroughbred bred in France would
duplicate that of the English variety.
