About the Galiceno Breed
.It is claimed for this breed, which is now
established in the USA, that it originated in Galicia in North-west
Spain and was among those which were bred by Cortés when
he landed in South America.
Description. The height is from 12 to 13.2 hands at maturity
and the weight from 600lb to 700lb. Solid colours prevail, the
majority being bays, blacks, sorrels and a few duns. No paints,
pintos or albinos are eligible for registration. The Galiceno
is extremely gentle and easy to handle. Its good disposition,
even after a hard ride or workout, is another reason why it
makes an ideal ‘all-family’ horse. It is bright
and alert, and very quick to learn, high intelligence being
a fundamental trait. For hundreds of years the Galiceno has
been used for pulling carts, carrying pack supplies and doing
ranch work, as well as acting as an excellent riding animal.
Although small, the Galiceno is remarkably hardy with an abundance
of natural courage and stamina.
