About the Hackney Pony Breed
.The evolution of the Hackney Pony is somewhat
obscure as to date, though it is in fact a smaller edition of
the Hackney Horse, which is of some antiquity. It is generally
believed that the pony’s first appearance was through
a 14hand Hackney Pony stallions foaled in the North of England
in 1866 and registered as ‘Sir George’, and sired
by a horse which was of the purest Yorkshire blood named ‘Sportsman’,
although nothing is known of the breeding of the dam. From such
breeding, however, came perhaps the most spectacular exhibit
to be seen in English horse shows today.
Owing to the decline of the use of the harness-horse and pony,
which has been progressive in England for many years, the Hackney
is seen almost exclusively in the show-ring, where he is most
popular. There the demand is for the most extravagant action
which it is possible to produce in a horse, and nothing short
of this can carry the animal to any degree of success. The action
must be spectacular, fluid and extravagant, with knees raised
to the extremity and feet flung forward with rounded action,
avoiding any heaviness of forehand or going into the ground.
The hocks must be brought right under the body and raised almost
to touch it. The whole effect must be arresting and startling,
showing extreme brilliance. The best of these ponies fetch high
prices both for the home and export trade.
The Hackney Pony must be of true pony type, especially as to
the head, and the small horse, as distinct from the pony, must
be avoided. Of late years, in spite of the development of more
extravagant action, there is a tendency in the breed to lose
a certain straightness of action, many otherwise good ponies
going too close in front with hocks away.
Ponies whose action is not sufficiently extravagant for the
show ring find a not-too-ready market. To the extent that they
can be absorbed into the harness market, they serve a very good
purpose, for they are possessed of hard legs and will stand
up to wear in spite of popular belief to the contrary.
That they are active workers may be assumed. Owing to the enormous
amount of muscular development in the hocks, the Hackney Pony
was at one time much in demand as a showjumper, at which sport
it excelled. Up to the early years of last century the pony
was much used by tradesmen for delivery purposes, owing to its
flash appearance and the fact that it is an active and honest
worker. In addition, it was looked upon as a good advertisement
for any tradesman.
Description: Pony character throughout. A long neck, good shoulders
and a compact, strong body with hard limbs and well-defined
tendons. Colours are mostly bays, browns and blacks.
