About the Knabstrup Breed
.This bred is an old Danish one, exclusively
confined to spotted horses, and it seems that the peculiar form
of these spots, described by the British Horse Society as ‘leopard’,
‘snowflake’ and ‘blanket’, are to be
found in the Knabstrup.
During the Napoleonic wars, Spanish troops were stationed in
Denmark for a short period, and one of their officers left behind
a spotted mare, which, although relegated to the honest work
required by a butcher in the delivery of meat, proved outstanding
both as to speed and endurance. A Major Villars Lunn, the owner
of an estate known as Knabstrup, subsequently bought this chestnut
mare, which had ‘blanket’ markings with a white
mane and tail and was of English hunter rather than of Spanish
type. This officer and his father before him were great breeders
of horses of riding type, always laying special stress on hardiness,
speed and endurance, their stock originating from the famous
old Royal Frederiksborg stud, which was of Spanish-Arab-Barb
type similar to the Lipizzaner.
So it was that the butcher’s mare, which was named ‘Flaebehoppen’,
became the foundation mare of the spotted Knabstrup breed. In
1812 she was put to a Frederiksborg stallion of Palomino colour
and produced a colt, ‘Flaebehingsten’, which became
the foundation stallion of the breed, and he too had similar
colouring and the markings of the original mare. It is said
that this horse, while having similar colourings, which were
of lighter shades, had a general and rather peculiar metallic
appearance and was described as having ‘more than twenty
colours’.
In Denmark, interest in this breed is very considerable, more
than one Society having been formed, and there are a number
of stud farms in the country. Needless to say, with the inevitable
variations that occur in all spotted markings, the Knabstrup
is sought as a circus horse and may be seen performing in Great
Britain. The average height of the Knabstrup is 15.3 hands.
