About the Mongolian Breed
.This horse, or rather pony, among the most
ancient of the types of Equus Caballus, is to be found, both
domesticated and feral, all over Mongolia, that vast, desolate
area reaching from Manchuria in the east to Turkestan in the
west, bounded by Siberia on the north and by Tibet and China
to the south. These ponies are exceedingly plentiful, being
kept and bred in huge numbers by the Buriats and other Mongolian
tribes, and, as may be expected in this inhospitable region,
are extremely hardy and enduring.
In the Eastern parts of Mongolia they are much in demand for
export to China for racing and polo. There they are also crossed
with other imported foreign breeds, from which has been produced
the so-called China pony, which is not really a breed at all.
In the west, Mongolian ponies have undoubtedly mingled in the
past with Arabs to produce the Turkoman horses of Turkestan.
To the south in Tibet and in the Himalayas their influence is
also seen in the hill ponies of those regions, Spiti, Bhutan,
Yarkland, and so on, which are all certainly closely related
to the Mongolian. Nor does its influence there. The animals
of Burma and Malaya are not indigenous to those countries, and
there is no doubt that they derive in part from Mongolian stock.
Even the famous Manipur breed has its ultimate origin from it.
The nomad owners of these ponies, while they breed them in large
numbers, do not take any special pains to improve the stock,
and certainly do not waste any time or money on feeding. The
pony has to live on whatever it can pick up, which is not much
and is tough at that. Consequently the teeth are usually very
much worn down. Stallions are always animals selected by the
breeders, but no attention is paid to the mares.
The average height of the Mongolian stallion is about 13.1 hands,
but varies between 12.2 and 13.3 hands. The lowest heights seem
to be found usually to the east along the China border, and
the best in the northern districts.
In appearance they have heavy heads and shoulders and smallish
eyes, thick necks, deep chests, well-sprung ribs, good quarters
and loins and legs, with plenty of bone. Their hoofs are iron
hard, though they are apt to be abnormally worn down by the
hard and stony going. Mane and crest are coarse, coats long
and shaggy, with flowing forelocks and tails that sweep the
ground. The tails are thick haired at the roots.
