About the Polish Arab Breed
.The Poles have been renowned through history
as great horse-lovers and great horse-breeders, with a pronounced
individuality in their methods. One of their great authors once
wrote: “Having prayed to God for help then a horse lover
does his best in breeding his horses…and trusts more to
his own experience than to books.’ Their horses have always
been in great demand throughout Europe, whatever the breed or
period, and the Polish cavalry of the 17th century, mounted
on the Polish horse, were almost invincible.
These horses had Eastern blood in them, Arab, Barb, Turkish,
Persian, etc. The Arab, however, played an increasingly important
role in Polish horse-breeding, and has held the highest place
in the estimation of the Poles since the 16th century, when
the Polish Sigismund II (Augustus) was the only European ruler
to have a royal stud of pure Arabs as Knyszyn. Arabian horses
were, however, certainly introduced earlier than that during
the many wars with the Turks and Tartars.
The oldest Arab studs in Poland are those of Chrestowka and
Szamrajowska, belonging to the Sanguszko family. The former,
known as the Slawuta Stud, dates from 1506, and was reorganised
in 1791 by Jerome Sanguszko, who in 1803 sent the first horse-buying
expedition from Europe to Arabia, which returned in 1805 with
five stallions and one mare. A second expedition in 1816, which
was greatly indebted to an English resident in Aleppo named
Rawson, brought back nine fine stallions, of which the best
were ‘Hajlan’ and ‘Dzielf’ and one mare.
Other Polish princely families, such as Potocki, Rzewuski and
Rozwadowski, also imported Arabs periodically; and one Polish
nobleman, Count Rzewuski, lived in the desert and became a legendary
figure among the Bedouins.
To the student of good horses and therefore of correct conformation,
the Polish Arab left little to be desired. Of a good front,
with well set-back shoulders, the horse would in the majority
of cases always show a strong-topped, short backed and deep-set
body on short legs. The Arab gave it just that amount of elegance
which, combined with the rather more stout material provided
by the female side, produced an animal which appealed to all
connoisseurs of horses. Furthermore, these were to be found
as a level whole in great numbers, a tribute to the genius of
the Polish nation as horse-breeders.
