About the Shetland Breed
.As one of the smallest breeds of ponies,
the Shetland is known throughout the whole of the civilised
world, and is remarkable for being probably the strongest member
of the equine world in relation to its size. It is claimed that
the Falabella, which is Shetland-bred, is the smallest pony
known. The pony’s origin is unknown, but records of its
existence in the Shetland Isles, lying to the north of Scotland,
date back many centuries. Its diminutive size is thought to
be due to the severe climate of the regions where it lives,
but this is not entirely true, as generations of specimens bred
in the South of England and elsewhere seem to increase little
if anything in size. In the islands the pony certainly has much
to endure, especially at the end of a severe winter and before
the spring grass appears, and often has to rely on seaweed for
its food.
Not until the middle of the 19th century was any attempt made
in the way of selective breeding, and it was a few years prior
to this that the pony was first used in the coal pits. Previously
to that, its general use in the islands was, in spite of its
size, as a saddle-pony and as a pack-pony, generally for carting
seaweed for fertilising the ground. The great demand from the
pits caused the breeding of these ponies to flourish, and as
the buyers took the best, the stock became very poor in quality,
until Lord Londonderry established a stud in 1870 in the islands
of Bressay and Noss. His stallion ‘Jack’ as a foundation
sire became famous and has had a profound influence on the breed.
As more mines became powered by electricity, and later closed
down, the demand for the pony decreased, and it has become increasingly
evident that the pony’s market is more that of a saddle-pony
for children, for whom, owing to its docile and tractable character,
it is well suited. Added to this, it has a picturesque and quaint
beauty quite unlike any other breed. Withal, it is a loveable
character and is deservedly popular, and much kept just as a
pet.
Description: Height average is 40 inches. Registered stock must
not exceed 40 inches at three years old and 42 inches at 4 years
old and over. Colour: black is the foundation colour, but can
be bay, brown, chestnut, grey and parti-colours, etc. Coat changes
according to the seasons of the year – double coat in
winter and smooth in summer. Head, well shaped and sensible-looking,
and ears nicely placed, broad in forehead, with fairly straight
fore face (not dished or roman nosed), sound mouth and pleasing
eye (walleyes not favoured, especially in solid colours). Neck
should rise off a well-raised oblique shoulder, strong and muscular,
with good crest, especially in stallions (not straight out between
the shoulders with crest reversed). The length of neck should
be in proportion to the size of the pony. Body, thick set and
deep ribbed, with short back, broad chest and quarters, nice
sloping shoulder, tail well set on, profuse mane and tail, and
feathering of straight hair. Loins strong and muscular. Legs:
forelegs well placed under the shoulder and chest, and standing
plumb (neither knock-kneed nor too wide apart) with well-muscled
forearm, strong knees followed though by good flat bone (not
back in the knee). Nice springy pasterns (not too short or long).
Hind legs, thighs strong and muscular with broad, sharply developed
hock followed through by good flat bone and pasterns (not cow-hocked
or wide behind). Feet, tough, round and well shaped (not short,
narrow, contracted or thin). Action, straight full movement,
fore and aft, bending knees and hocks well (not exaggerated
or stilted).
