About the Thoroughbred Breed
.The name is synonymous with the present-day
racehorse, and the Thoroughbred is the best-known of all British
breeds, famous throughout the world, and to a large extent represents
all that is best in the horse world; indeed the Thoroughbred
sets a degree of excellence in points which has become a standard.
It should, however, be borne in mind that the English Thoroughbred
is, in fact, of foreign blood, but is called ‘English’
because of the long time it has been bred and developed in England.
All Thoroughbred in fact trace their ancestry to three Arabian
sires, and their names are well-known – the Darley Arabian,
the Godolphin Arabian and the Byerley Turk. Much has been written
to suggest that these famous horses were put to English mares,
but, on the other hand, there is much evidence to suggest that
the foundation mares were Eastern mares and no doubt Arabian.
As time went on, less and still less Arab blood was introduced,
and the desire for more speed became paramount and more insistent,
for today the Arab cannot live with the Thoroughbred in any
test of speed, for the latter has become truly a racing machine,
and a wonderful one at that. Even now times tend to become even
faster and with it the prices of such stock become more spectacular.
The value of the breed, therefore, being based almost entirely
on speed, those which cannot win on the racecourse, unless possessed
of some admixture in their breeding which is particularly sough
after, tend to become of little value. The great majority of
the horses are gelded, and they and the mares find a market
among those seeking hunters, hacks and even polo ponies. Latterly
the market for unwanted Thoroughbred mares has become somewhat
more ‘open’ to cross with the Arab, producing as
they do a most desirable animal in the Anglo-Arab, often an
animal of exceptional beauty, with a more equable temperament
than the Thoroughbred. The Thoroughbred is much used as a sire
to produce hunters.
The Thoroughbred at its best is a very beautiful horse, perhaps
the most beautiful in the world, with the exception of the Arab.
It must be stated, however, that as the result of a number of
contributory causes, much unsoundness in wind and limb exists.
A description of the horse must be that of the highest class
of light horse in existence. The head refined; the neck elegant
and arched, wither pronounced, and the shoulder very sloping;
legs, clean, hard, and of good bone with tendons pronounced.
The back short, the body deep with robs well-sprung to barrel
shape, the croup high. Tail well set and quarters generous to
a degree with hocks well let down, standing true and moving
with a great striding action. The whole, one of intense refinement
and indicative of great speed.
The position of the Thoroughbred in the world of Horses is an
enviable one for two very potent reasons. Flat-racing and steeple-chasing
are so firmly established, constituting now almost a national
industry, that it seems inconceivable that any elimination or
marked reduction in the sport need be feared. No other breed
of horse can ever take the place of the T on account of its
speed, even if any other breed were made eligible for entry
at Weatherby and Sons, which again is inconceivable. The breed
stands unchallenged as a racehorse.
The Thoroughbred, along with the Arab, is the main source of
upgrading of very many breeds. As this has been practised for
centuries it may be fairly assumed that its value is proved
beyond possibility of doubt.
The Jockey Club is the body controlling flat-racing in England.
